Week 13
This week began with a fun trip around Manhattan Island in the Fast Rescue Boats that we had been training on. It was nice to actually "go somewhere" this time in the boats instead of in circles out in the bay. And for many of us, like myself, it was the first time I had ever been around Manhattan Island. It was interesting to see the different neighborhoods around the island. Plus, with our instructors as tour guides, we got to learn a bunch of fascinating information about New York, like where the slums were, and where dead bodies had been found...you know... fun things like that. Plus, we got to see Yankee Stadium, where we successfully kept Megan from throwing things in that general direction (why is it since meeting Megan that I now seem to cheer for the Boston Red Soxs...hmm??), and the Statue of Liberty, among many other things. The rest of the week was spent with more towing drills in the FRBs, as well as a swim in Long Island Sound when we practiced man overboard drills. We all had the chance to suit up in immersion suits and hop in the fairly cold water. With the immersion suits on though, it felt good. Plus it was a sunny, calm day, so it was rather fun except for when you would swim through a small pile of trash and other unmentionable things. That was a bit gross, but I just tried to swim in the opposite direction if I saw anything coming, which made it interesting for the boat when they were trying to rescue me as I was swimming away from them. Hehe...oops!! All in all, a fun week with a lot of on the water experience which is always exciting.

I like
this picture as we're all looking in different directions. It's kinda
funny.
Looking
south down the Hudson River. This is where the East River joins with the
Hudson. I'm can't remember what bridge that is, but there's a lot of them,
so... Oh look, there's Marc's head too.
Here's a good toss from
Tim onto our boat. We were practicing throwing a heaving line to another
person.
Here's Chris after we rescued him
from Long Island Sound. All smiles, I guess that means his immersion suit
didn't leak. I heard it was rather chilly if you had one of the old suits.
Here's Mark and I
floating in Long Island Sound after jumping in. Fortunately, I also got
one of the suits that didn't leak. It was kind of nice floating there
actually.
